John George Ziegler (b. 3 Aug 1810, Baden, Germany; d. 19 Jun 1884, Bethel, Shelby, MO) was the son of Bernhardt Ziegler, b. 1783, nr. Baden, Germany; d. 1840-44, near Phillipsburg, Beaver, PA. Bernhardt was married in Germany abt. 1805, to Julianna Frances, (1787-1858) (She d. in Bethel, Shelby, MO. They had 9 children, but I just have 5 listed. Refs. I have: "Geo. Rapp's Harmony Society, 1785-1847" by Karl J. Arndt. Bernhardt and Julianna had 9 children - Not all of names are known. It's believed that all of the family members had come to America by 1835, settling first in Pittsburg. He was a blacksmith by trade. Some of their children born in America? Where Bernhardt died - Phillipsburg, PA - a place of importance because former members of the Harmony Society settled at that site in 1832, establishing their own community. It seemed likely that the Ziegler's learned of Dr. Keil because of their proximity to the ex-Harmonists who were approached by Keil during the mid-1840's. There is no current evidence to suggest that Ziegler's had been members of the Harmony Society. The Harmony site had been sold by the members to an Abraham Ziegler. The Harmonists then moved to Indiana and had considerable problems collecting for the sale. We have no evidence that the two Ziegler families were related. It appears that Bernhardt had other children living at Bethel than just John George. 1840 Fed Census
