Margaret - thought I'd pass this along, at least it's food for thought.
In 1870 & 1880 Joseph has daughter Mary T but wife's name is consistantly Martha J rather than Mary J
I looked in Cannon for both a Mary and a Martha b around the right time and there were two possibilities. One was Mary but it turned out she married someone else.
The other was a Martha J Barrett in 1850 District 6 Cannon with her parents. TN State Marriage Records 1780-2002 :
Joseph O Williams m Martha J Barrett 19 Feb 1865 in Cannon Co by JP Joseph Finley.
1870 District 6 Cannon TN
Joseph Williams 23 TN
Martha J 28 TN
Mary T 3 TN
Manda F 2 TN
Jessie 19 TN
1880 District 6 Cannon TN
J O Williams 38
Martha J 41

In 1900 Joseph is with married daughter Sarah b Dec 1871 TN & husband Henry H Higgins b Apr 1866 TN, Joseph b May 1847 TN

Nathan 21 TN
Martha J 13 TN
H C (male) 10 TN
There was a marriage record for a John W Barrett m Sarah Vinson on 20 Feb 1849 in Cannon by JP Thomas ELkins.
