John Ware was born about 1828, most likely in Ohio (The 1856 Iowa state census indicates Pennsylvania, but everything else indicates Ohio). According to letters written by his grandson and granddaughter, he came from a large family, with a sister Ellen and a brother Conrad, of Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry. Unfortunately, I have not been able to confirm anything ealier than that time. By 1856 he was living in Mt Pleasant, Iowa and is listed as a Tailor. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Fraternity and, according to an Odd Fellows historian in Iowa, the lodge he attended (Henry Lodge) conducted meetings in German (which possibly confirms the Pennsylvania Dutch). In April 1858 he married Amanda Jane Murphy and they were living in Keokuk, Iowa by 1859-60, according to the city directory. They had four children (Ella Florence, Alfred Robert, Clara Louise, and Charles Columbus - my Great Grandfather), all of whom were born in Keokuk. He operated a tailoring business, specializing in theatrical costumes, until his death. John died of a heart attack in August 1868 and was buried, most likely in an unmarked grave, in an Odd Fellows plot in or near Keokuk. His widow and children relocated to Trenton, Missouri shortly after John's death to be closer to Amanda's family, who had located there shortly after the Civil War. I have found information on a Conrad Wehr family in Bloom Twp. Fairfield County, Ohio that appears to be a match, but since I have no concrete link between John in Iowa in 1856 and Johannes in Ohio in 1840, I've been hesitant to state it as being so. Does anyone have information that would confirm or dispute this possible connection? Notify Administrator about this message?
