Thornborough Family Genealogy Forum

I have traced my ancestry to Thornborough, Yorkshire, England. Sir William of Thornborough around 1200. If your family comes from this area then you will be very interested in this post. The village of Thornborough is located next to the largest Neolithic Henge complex in Great Britian which dates back several thousand years. A Henge is an earthen embankment in a circle with a ditch on the outside. The Thornborough Henge is made up of three henges connected together over several thousand yards. It was a religious/ceremonial monument made by prehistoric man. Anyone who is interested in knowing more about this Henge complex can email me. If anyone ever wishes to travel to Thornborough, England and have any type of "family History tour" there is also Cartmel in western Cumbria not far to the west. The decendants of Sir William were given the Cartmel Priory, which is one of the oldest Norman Churches left standing in England and features a stained glass portrait of William Thornburg and his wife circa approx.1575. I would be interested in making a history tour and meet other Thornburgs. The Thornborough Henges are under threat of an adjacent gravel quarry, and all the surrounding area quarried out and turned into lakes by a quarry company called Tarmac Northern Ltd. There is a group I beloong to called Friends of Thornborough who are trying to stop this destructive quarrying and save the Henge Complex along with its surrounding Archaeology. Please visit this website: <http://www.friendsofthornborough.org.uk/> and see what I am talking about. This is our natural Heritage under threat. Also I belong to a Web List where people talk about ways to save the Henges and petition for the quaerrying to stop. You can visit it and join at: <http://www.smartgroups.com/group/group.cfm?gid=2845202>
Also visit: www.heritageaction.org and see what they are doing to save our history.
