Hi, I am posting the notes that I have for some of my pioneer ancestors, in hopes that they may be of interest to some of you that are doing research on your ancestors. Enjoy, Janet Descendants of Jean Therrien Generation No. 1 1. Jean1 Therrien was born about 1610 in Normandie, France. He married Marie Elie 16 Oct 1634 in St. Remi de Dieppe, France. She was born about 1610 in Normandie, France. Notes for Jean Therrien: He was a merchant of cloth. Child of Jean Therrien and Marie Elie is: + 2 i. Jean2 Therrien-dit-Duhaime-DuPonceau, born 20 Dec 1643 in St. Jacques, Dieppe, Rouen, Normandie, France; died Bef. 06 Oct 1675 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC. Generation No. 2 2. Jean2 Therrien-dit-Duhaime-DuPonceau (Jean1 Therrien) was born 20 Dec 1643 in St. Jacques, Dieppe, Rouen, Normandie, France, and died Bef. 06 Oct 1675 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC. He married Marie-Judith Rigaud 26 Jan 1667 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC (ct 25, Ameau), daughter of Elisee Rigaud and Suzanne DuGas. She was born about 1633 in St. Jean d'Angely, Saintonge, France. Notes for Marie-Judith Rigaud: "Filles à Marier", page 268, Judith Rigaud was born about 1633 in Saint-Jean d'Angély (diocese of Saintes), Saintonge, the daughter of Elisée Rigaud and Suzanne Dugast. After losing her mother, on 05 July 1651 Judith was at La Rochelle, where she enlisted as a single girl to go to New France in the service of Marguerite LeGardeur, wife of Jacques Le Neuf de La Poterie, at Trois Rivières. She spent nine months at Montréal, then returned to work at Trois Rivières. On 06 May 1654, Judith married François Lemaitre (or Lemaistre) dit Le Picard at Trois Rivières. No marriage contract has been found for this couple and it is not known if Judith could sign her name or not. Her husband definitely could not. Unfortunately, Francois was a drinker and ran up considerable debts. In 1665, Judith returned to France, probably to settle an inheritance. Son Charles was born 15 April 1666 in the parish of Saint-Jean-du-Perrot in La Rochelle, Aunis, France. While in France, Judith bought goods from merchant Arnault Perré to resell in Canada, acting on behalf of her husband. However, when she returned later in 1666, Judith learned of the death of François Lemaitre dit Le Picard, who was buried 14 January 1666 at Trois -Rivières. To add insult to injury, most of her husband's possessions were seized by creditors and François' death left Judith in further debt with Perré, who later sought reparations with the Sovereign Council (06 August 1668). Judith asked for six years to pay back her creditors, who countered with charges that she had a bed worth 500 lives (today's USA value of about $7,125) and "sumptuous clothes" and that she traded the merchandise that she had bought with Indians, who gave her furs which she was hiding from them. The Council accorded her three years to pay her debts, during which time she could not sell the house or property formerly belonging to François. On 26 January 1667, Judith married Master Surgeon Jean Therrien-dit-Duhaime (or Terrien) dit Duhaime in Trois Rivières. It is not known if either spouse could sign the marriage contract drawn up 25 January by notary Ameau. Jean Therrien-dit-Duhaime dit Duhaime died at Trois Rivières some time before 06 October 1675, when Judith married Jean de La Planche at Trois Rivières. Their marriage contract was drawn up 15 July at Rivière Manereuil (Louiseville) sous seing privé and was deposited with notary Adhémar on 21 January 1676. He and Judith did not have any children together. On 21 February 1677, Jean is noted at Montréal in a transaction drawn up by notary Basset. Judith accompanied him, but things were apparently not going well in the marriage. Some sources claim that Judith left her third husband and was living in sin with Pierre Cavelier at Lachine. However, it was Jean who returned to France some time before 14 June 1678. Whether he left to escape his wife's alleged infidelity or whether it was he who abandoned her is not clear. Nonetheless, on that date Judith appeared before the Sovereign Council, protesting the seizure of l2 1/2 minots of grain from her son-in-law Jacques Passard dit La Bretonnière (husband of Marie Lemaitre). On 05 September 1678 (saddled with debt) Judith and Pierre were ordered to leave Cavelier's house and lands so that his grains could be harvested and sold and the proceeds paid to their creditors. However, the transcript of that session of the Sovereign Council clearly refers to the two as a couple, without stating or inferring any improper conduct on their part. It sees that, "publicly accused of being the concubine of Cavelier, Judith Rigaud was able to reform public opinion of herself and succeeded in ending her days respected by her neighbors." Children of Jean Therrien-dit-Duhaime-DuPonceau and Marie-Judith Rigaud are: 3 i. Dominique3 Therrien-dit-Duhaime, born 06 Nov 1667 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC; died 06 Dec 1667 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC. + 4 ii. Jean-Baptiste Therrien-dit-Duhaime, born 16 Mar 1669 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC; died 23 May 1759 in Nicolet, QC. Generation No. 3 4. Jean-Baptiste3 Therrien-dit-Duhaime (Jean2 Therrien-dit-Duhaime-DuPonceau, Jean1 Therrien) was born 16 Mar 1669 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC, and died 23 May 1759 in Nicolet, QC. He married Marguerite Lampron-dit-Lacharite 09 Nov 1700 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC, daughter of Jean-Baptiste Lampron/Laspron-dit-Lacharite and Anne-Michelle-Marie Renaud. She was born 30 May 1676 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC, and died 26 May 1753 in Nicolet, QC. Notes for Jean-Baptiste Therrien-dit-Duhaime: Two of Jean Baptiste's daughters married Cotret-dit-Descoudrays brothers and both became my 6th great grandmothers. Their son Joseph was contracted to work out West on 13 May 1727 and 23 May 1730. Notes for Marguerite Lampron-dit-Lacharite: She had a marriage contract drawn up by notary Ameau on 5 Aug 1698. It was annulled. This was a common thing in those days. Children of Jean-Baptiste Therrien-dit-Duhaime and Marguerite Lampron-dit-Lacharite are: 5 i. Marguerite-Marie4 Therrien-dit-Duhaime, born 05 Jan 1702 in St. Jean de l'Île d'Orléans, Montmorency, QC; died 22 Nov 1772 in St. Jean Baptiste de Nicolet, QC. She married Rene Cottret-dit-Descoudrays 08 Jun 1717 in Cathedrale de Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC (ct 28 May, Poulin); born 22 Feb 1695 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC; died 30 Mar 1763 in Nicolet, QC. Notes for Rene Cottret-dit-Descoudrays: Jette and PRDH used the surname Cotteret, Tanguay used the name Coltret and that was wrong. The hand writing in the original files was not very clear and the second "t" was not crossed. Eventually some of Rene's decedents used his first name Rene for their surname. Rene's grandson (my ancestor) used the name Rene. In the wedding book of St. Zéphirin de Courval at Yamaska Québec, my great great grandmother Nancy Genery's parents show up as Thomas Genery and Marie Adelaide Rene. Tanguay has several other variations for this surname, including for whatever reason, "Pipardeau". Rene and his brother Pierre married Terrien sisters. Rene Cottret-dit-Descoudrays' daughter Marie-Angelique gave birth to an illegitimate son (father unknown) on 2 Feb 1749 in Nicolet and she died a few weeks later on 11 May 1749. She may have died of birth complications. It seems that this illegitimate son was raised by her older brother Jean Baptiste. Marie-Angelique's son died when he was 13 years old on 3 Apr 1762 at Nicolet. 6 ii. Marie-Madeleine Therrien-dit-Duhaime, born 28 Sep 1703 in St. Jean de l'Île d'Orléans, Montmorency, QC; died 14 Apr 1783 in Nicolet, QC. She married Guillaume Dubois, (Clement & Marie Anne Jouin) 09 Jan 1732 in Nicolet, QC; born 28 Jul 1709 in Québec City, QC; died 06 Feb 1787 in Nicolet, QC. 7 iii. Jean-Baptiste Therrien-dit-Duhaime, born 16 Mar 1705 in La Durantaye, QC. He married Jeanne-Marie Benoit-dit-Laforest 25 Sep 1723 in St. François du Lac, Yamaska, QC; born 01 Jul 1698 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC; died 09 Feb 1726 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC. 8 iv. Marie-Louise Therrien-dit-Duhaime, born 30 Oct 1706 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC; died 26 Aug 1753 in Nicolet, QC. Notes for Pierre Cottret-dit-Descoudrays: His godparents were Pierre Chabot and Angelique Couc. Pierre and his brother Rene married Terrien sisters. 9 v. Joseph Therrien-dit-Duhaime, born about 1708 in Unknown, QC; died 09 May 1789 in Nicolet, QC. He married Marie-Francoise Benoit-dit-Laforest 29 Apr 1732 in La Baie du Febvre, Yamaska, QC; born 25 Mar 1706 in Trois Rivières, St. Maurice, QC; died 28 Jan 1790 in Nicolet, QC. 10 vi.
