Marjorie, I believe that your research and conclusions regarding the family of Hans Jorg “George” are correct, and agree with the research that I have conducted but more importantly, it agrees with research done by Tom Fisher and Daniel Bly. 1. I totally agree that our George SUMMERS arrived on the Ship St. Andrew in 1738 and settled in Montgomery Township, PA. 2. Although the New Hanover Church records from the 1740s show that George’s wife was named Margaretha, the evidence is inconclusive that this was the same Maria Margaretha who arrived a year earlier on the Charming Nancy with Michael and Elizabeth SOMERS, or that Michael and Elizabeth were George’s parents. 3. I agree that George had two sons named John, one born in Germany (1737) before they emigrated and one born in Montgomery Township in 1746. This younger John was my 4g-gfather. His son Jacob, who married Christiana Venis in Augusta Co., later took his family west (about 1818) and settled in Floyd County, IN. 4. I agree that both brothers married women named Elizabeth, the older John’s wife was Elizabeth RIEDENAUR, according to Church records. This Elizabeth had a younger sister named Mary Elizabeth, who may have been the wife of the younger John. The evidence that she was also a REIDENAUR, however, is speculative only and inconclusive. 5. After George moved his family to Tom’s Brook, VA (Frederick County at the time, but it soon became Shenandoah County), the two brothers moved to Augusta County, VA. The younger John died there in 1803, and the older brother in 1806. Both brothers are buried at St. James Cemetery in Middlebrook, the younger John next to his wife Elizabeth, who died in 1832. Elizabeth (REIDENAUR) SUMMERS, the wife of the older brother John, died in 1812 and is buried at Mt. Tabor Lutheran cemetery, also in Middlebrook. 6. The name “Tobin”, which is often associated with the younger brother John, is generally believed to have been a misprint or a misinterpretation of Church records. 7. Having personally examined the tombstone of the younger John, the year of birth shown could be either 1740 or 1746. Erosion has made the inscription very weak, so it could say either. Because of this lack of clarity, I have preferred to use the 1746 date from the New Hanover, PA Church record. Notify Administrator about this message?
