Daniel Strunk's Origins

My father (son of Rose > David Elisha Alexander > Isham B > Daniel) talks about a family legend of the original Strunks who came to the US had smuggled gold out of Europe, possibly to help fund the Revolution. The story goes that two brothers landed on a pirate ship in Charleston, SC, took their cargo off, possibly changed their names and took off, one north, one stayed in the south. Presumably, John would have been the brother that stayed in the South. Although, this story might seem far-fetched, I was wondering if anyone else has heard of a simular story?
