I'll talk to my mother-in-law this weekend and ask her if she knows where and how her Mom got it. What she has looks like it's pages copied from the book, then bound by six or so wide plastic rings. Also, it doesn't have a "publisher" listed in the book. It just says copyright (the c inside a circle) Louise Kiser, so I'm thinking it was self published.

Much of the info has to do with Edgar Garland (son of James Daniel and Litha (Strunk) Garland, and his relationship with his cousin, Ben Strunk, "Edgar's closest friend and childhood playmate".

As for the Strunks, she mentions General Jackson Strunk (Litha's brother-a circuit riding Baptist preacher)and his wife Nancy, General Strunk's sons (Fount, Harve, Will and Ben) and three daughters (Lith, Ada, and Nanny Mary), Thomas and Savela (Cox) Strunk.

James Daniel and Litha lived with General Strunk right before Edgar was born in 1898 in his house in what they called The Pear Tree Field. Litha had told Edgar she had found him in a blackberry patch around there.

At least once a month, General Strunk would invite the entire congregation of Grave Hill church for Sunday dinner after he had preached. There was one story, about how General Strunk did not allow his children to play cards. Their mother, Nancy, caught them playing cards one afternoon. One of the boys jumped up and quickly hid the cards....in general's Baptismal robe pocket. Well, Sunday rolled around, and it was Baptism time. General donned his robe and stepped into the river. His robe floated up, and out of the pocket floate dout the ace of clubs, then the king, queen, jack, and finally the ten. Nancy declared, "Oh, boys, you've ruined your Pa, you've ruined your Pa!" The youngest, the guilty son, replied, "All I can say is this, Ma. If he can't stand on a hand like that-let him go down!" (There is a picture of General and Nancy Strunk. It's not a very good one but you can make out the looks of their faces pretty well.)

Another story says that the congregation met one summer day during a drought, to pray for rain. General rode up on his mule, got down, wiped the sweat from under his straw hat, took the saddle off the mule, slung it over his shoulder, strode into church, and tossed it into the corner. Someone in the congregation asked him why he brought it in the church. He said, "I came to pray for rain and I don't want my saddle to get wet."(There's also a picture of Grave Hill Baptist Church).

There are a few more stories involving General Strunk but I'll have to share them later. There is also a picture of General Strunk with his family. There are 12 people in the picture but I don't know who is who. And also another picture of General's wife, Nancy, with her children, Ben and Nanny Mary.

Edgar and Ben went to visit their Grandma Strunk (Savela) one day. She fed them sandwiches and cake, and such. They asked in a facetious tone of voice where Grandpa was..."out stopping someone from bleeding?"
Savela chided them and said, "Don't make fun of Granpa's unusual gifts. He's blown alot of fire out of burns, and he's stopped alot of people in this community from bleeding to death. He really has the gift of stopping blood."

Sorry to go on and on but I just love these stories. If you are interested in any of the pictures, I can scan them and send them. I don't mind.

Betty
