There is ALOT of info out there on Lithia and Daniel James. Here's something I just learned: My husband's grandmother, Virginia, who passed away just last year, was a granddaughter of Litha (Lithia, Lith) Strunk Garland. Among Virginia's possesions was a book titled "Back To The Bent" written in 1995 by (Lythella) Louise Garland Kiser (cousin to Virginia). It has some wonderful pictures and stories about Daniel James Garland and his wife, Litha (Strunk). Their son, Edgar, was Louise's father. A few things I learned: Litha was an excellent marksman. She could hit a nickel from a post twenty paces away. One winter night while alone with the children, she saw a man going toward her corn crib. She slid open the window and fired a shot from her pearl handled revolver into the darkness. By time her husband, "Dandy Jim" got home, she was afraid she had killed a man. He checked, found no body but did find blood. The next day Daniel James went to the local store and saw a man (who was known to be a rogue) hobble in. The man made an excuse (bear) but Daniel James knew Litha had shot him and warned him to stay away or "that woman of mine will kill you!" There was a Strunk School and a Garland School (named for James Ballinger Garland). Daniel James Garland was given the nickname "Dandy Jim" because he always wore a collar and black bow tie to work as a clerk at a lumber yard. Everyone thought Mary Gibson (mother of Daniel James Garland) was going to be an old maid because she was so "old" when she finally married (James Ballinger Garland). She was 25! There is a wonderful clear picture of Daniel James Garland and one of Litha Strunk Garland. Betty
