Joshua Stokes served in the Florida Militia along with his brother, Andrew J. Stokes. There is a previously unidentified Stokes in this roster, William Stokes. It has not been determined yet whether William Stokes is related in some manner to Joshua or Andrew. Andrew Stokes appears as "Jackson" in the roster. The significance of this record is that it puts Joshua, Andrew J. and William Stokes in Florida, likely Jefferson County, on or before August 10, 1839. The copy of the actual Military Service record adds nothing more to this information, other than a comment in William Stokes' record of which the handwriting is somewhat illegible, but has something to do with "age". The following is copied from the Florida Department of Military Affairs, Special Archives Publication Number 71, Florida Militia Muster Rolls Seminole Indian Wars. The specific information is from Volume 5, pp, 56-57 and Volume 9, pp 9-10 and pp11-12. The original record can be found at the Florida State Archives, Tallahassee, Florida.
