Stanard Family Genealogy Forum

Hello Stephen:
I was researching William Stannard from VA to try to find out if he was related to my husband's branch of Stanards who originated in Connecticut. My husband descends from your line. He is the grandson of Elbert M. Stanard, son of James Hutton Stanard and Louisa Salisbury. We have been to Connecticut and Vermont doing genealogical research on the family. I have all the descendants, from John Alden on down. The progenitor of this family was John Stannard of Roxbury, MA. He was married to Margaret Miller. His son, Joseph Stannard, was one of the founders of Haddam, CT. He and his wife, Christian Spencer (who shares the same early descendants as Diana Spencer), moved to Saybrook, CT. The Stannards were prominent in Saybrook and Westbrook, CT. There is a Stannard Beach there and a Stannard Inn. It's a lovely place to visit.
Anyway, Joseph had five children. William, born 1674, married to Mercy Wright in Saybrook, CT, had a son, Lemuel Uriah Stannard, b. 1712 in Saybrook. He married Ruth Grinnell, a direct descendant of John Alden. My husband's and your line descends from Lemuel. The Stannards didn't stay in CT. They branched out to NY, VT, MI, and then west. There is a lot of information about this line on the internet, but be careful, there are a lot of mistakes as well. I see that your post is dated 2002, so you may already have filled in the blanks by now. As far as I can tell, William Stannard of VA is not related to the CT branch, but I don't know if he might be a brother of John's who came over later. Would love to know! I'd like to hear from you, or someone who might solve this enigma. M. Stanard (wife of Jim)
