The first Stamper in Cumberland was Ulrich Stampfer from Austria, a 'gast arbeiter' brought over by Elizabeth I with other miners and metal smelters to produce gold from the Cumberland fells. He married a local girl in the parish where my grandfather was born in 1560(?). Some Stampers who were Quakers were deported to America with others from Cumberland on account of their religion. Did they name the Cumberland Mountains(?)

Of any interest?
