Kushla, I have consulted my records and some of what I said in my first message is wrong. Here's the story: Agnes Steer Snell (1854-1926)was the eldest child (of a total of 9) of James Snell (ref 1) (1829-1917) and Agnes Steer Snell (nee Bettys) (1829-1909). She married William Thomas Maddern (rpt Maddern) on 23/8/1874 at Madron, Cornwall. It was Maddern's third marriage. They emigrated to NZ on the ship "Pleiades" (sailed 29-8-1874, arr Lyttleton 16-12-74)and spent 6 years at Christchurch before moving north to Marua (Northland) in 1880. As such, then, Agnes was the first of 'my' two Cornish Snell families to go to NZ - see below. Agnes' siblings were: Elizabeth Rowe Snell (20/4/1855-23/3/1941, ChCh) Thomasine Carter Snell (26/5/1857-28/2/1888, Leeston) Margaret Anne Snell (15/4/1860-9/10/1874, Paul, Cornwall) James Edward Snell (4/8/1862-15/7/1936, Carterton) William Carter Snell (10/10/1864-4/7/1954, Waitarere Beach) Nicholas John Snell (28/3/1867-3/4/1893, Sydenham, ChCh) Elilza Matilda Snell (23/2/1870-5/8/1948, ChCh) Clara Jane Snell (20/8/1872-16/12/1952, ChCh) Samuel Henry Snell (18/12/73-25/9/1960, Palm'n North) (Samuel Henry Snell is my grandfather) In 1876, Agnes' parents James (ref 1) and Agnes Snell emigrated to NZ on the ship "Waipa" (sailed Plymouth 27/10/1876, arr Lyttleton 21/1/87)together with their other 7 surviving chilren, and they settled in Leeston. Also on the Waipa were James Snell's (ref 1) brother, John Snell and 5 of his 8 children - no evidence of wife. One of these children was Edward George Snell, who is the grandfather of Peter George Snell, olympic athlete. This makes Agnes a first cousin, twice removed, of Peter Snell. I have some family history of Thomas Maddren (name changed by virtue of mis-spelling on immigrant list, apparently), which someone sent me as an extract from a "Maddren Family Reunion" held in 1991. They had 12 children together (not 4 as I previously notified you), the last of whom apparently died in 1978. I can send you this if you wish to advise me your email or fax number. The Snell families referred above lived in and around the small village of Paul, Cornwall (just west of Penzance). Churchyard cemetery there contains graves of James' (ref 1) father, and of James' ninth child, Margaret Anne. I have visited there a couple of times. I hope this is of interest. Regards Renny Snell Notify Administrator about this message?
