I have a blog at http://firelands.wordpress.com that tells the history of the founding of the town of Norwalk, Ohio in 1817 during the settlement of the Firelands or “Sufferers’ Land,” a part of the Western Reserve that was given to “Sufferers” burned out of their homes by the British during the Revolution. The story of one of the early settlers of the Firelands, Harriott Deaver, who moved to the Firelands with her family from New York as a child, is a major part of this history.
Harriott’s great-grandfather was Samuel Smith of Harford County Maryland who raised a company during the American Revolution. On my blog I have posted a genealogy of Samuel Smith and of the Deavers that was written by my great-grandmother and grandmother early in the last century.
I post an episode of the history of the “Sufferers’ Land” on my blog every Monday. I hope that people interested in the history of the Smith family will be entertained and informed by these postings and fill in gaps and correct inaccuracies in my research.
Thank you for your kind attention. I hope you visit my blog and enjoy my story of the Smith family and the pioneers of the “Sufferers’ Land.”
