Looking for information on the Schmidt/Schmitt families from the Dubois County area of Indiana. (Both spellings seem to be used for the same family in different records.) My great-grandfather George Schmidt/Schmitt was born in Germany in 1847 and came to America sometime before 1852, when his sister Maria Magdalena Schmidt was baptised in Ferdinand, IN. George's death record (1929)listed Syl Schmidt and Margaret Brenner as his parents. Maria Magdalena's baptism record listed Sebastian Schmidt and Margaretha Brenner as her parents. Based on this information, I am assuming that "Syl Schmidt" and "Sebastian Schmidt" are the same man...maybe "Syl" was misread from "Seb." George Schmidt married Elizabeth (Klee?/Kluh?/Kluegh?). They had at least 3 sons: Joseph (wife named Mary), John (wife named Josephine), and Pete (born 1888--wife named Rose Meyer--married 1919). Also, George and Elizabeth had at least 2 daughters: Anna (married a Schulte), Margaret/Maggie (married an Oser). I think there were more children...likely daughters. George raised his family on a farm between St. Henry and Holland, Indiana. His family were members of the St. Henry Catholic Church. John and Pete inherited the family farm and continued farming. Joe and Maggie settled in Huntingburg, Indiana. Annie raised her family in Spencer County near Rockport. Any information on this Schmidt/Schmitt family? Thanks!
