John - I am answering your inquiry into John S. Schmidt with brothers Jacob, Michael, and Fred. What I have found so far is: My G Grandfather Jacob Schmidt and G Grandmother Elizabeth (Young) Schmidt were from Baden, Germany. Jacob Schmidt was born in Baden on 11 July 1945. G Grandfather & GGrandmother came to USA 1849 and settled in St. Louis, MO. Jacob join the Union Army at the age of 16 - 1 June 1861. He received many commendations for his service. In 1873 he homesteaded in Nebraska, then in 1883 he came into the Eastern Washington area in the neighborhood of Sprague , WA. From there everything gets really vague. G Grandmother died and G Grandfather remarried - Unknown person at this time. My Grandfather John S. Schmidt (b.24 Jan. 1866 in St. Louis) married and came West to Washington in 1902. Both John and his half brother Jacob changed the spelling of their name to Smith. Michael and Fred J. Kept the spelling Schmidt ( this according to my mother who is the daughter of John S.) I have evidence that would indicate that Fred J. stayed in St. Louis, Mo. As yet I do not know if Fred or Michael were born in Germany or in St. Louis I have always assumed that they were born in MO. I do not have a clue as to whether Michael stayed in MO. or came West. He could have followed Jacob to Nebraska or even to the Dakota's. It was Jacob's influence that brought my Grandfather to Eastern Washington. As I have been ill my daughter Liz Mann put in the original message in Gen Forum. If you believe that we may have a connection please respond as I am sure it will be easier for the two of us to work on this together.
