I found your message very interesting, are and in my researchyou sure Jacob went to Washington. My grand-father's father lived in St. Louis. He also joined the army in the civil war and in my research the only Jacob Schmidt that I found in the Union army was my great grandfather showing he was discharged from the army in Illinois where he
settled in Mascoutah, ILL. One thing we know
about him was he had a relative who was a
member of the Reichstag in Germany. Probably
not the same Jacob but sure is interesting they both were from the St. Louis area and were in the Union Army.
