Hello all, If any one can help, perhaps someone on this forum will have some suggestions. My ancestor is Elizabeth Smith (possibly Schmidt). She was born between 1764-1770 in either Bavaria (one source said) or Rowan County/KY..(could be PA for all I know)! She married Samuel Hillis, Jr. in Paris/Bourbon/KY in 1794. For clues, Samuel and Elizabeth named their children (in order): Mary, Samuel C., John, Levi, William, James, and Washington. Samuel Hillis, Jr was the son of Samuel Hillis Sr. and Anna Luckey, daughter of Robert Luckey and Isabell. Robert Luckie/Luckey left a will in Martic/Lancaster/PA in 1754 naming Samuel Hillis, Sr. and his daughter Ann so I know that the Hillis family was in PA prior to 1754 and with other Scots-Irish there. They moved to Rowan NC en masse (with the Baldridge, Pendry, and Smith families I believe) before the Revolutionary War where most participated. My Samuel Hillis, Jr was blinded by a Torie at age 19. He and Elizabeth Smith were married in Bourbon/KY on 9 July 1794. That means that both Samuel and Elizabeth would have been abt 30-34 years of age. With him blind I can understand that, but 30 is quite old for a woman in those days, so she could have been a widow. I firmly believe that whoever her family was, they would have stayed pretty close to her. I often wonder how on earth a blind man could provide a house, food, and essentials on the frontier for himself, a wife, and eventually 7 children. I think that her parents would have stayed near by so I am probably looking for a Smith family who also moved from PA to Rowan NC then to KY in this time frame. They were also part of the Thyatira Church and the Irish Settlement in NC... Eventually, Samuel Hillis, Jr. and Elizabeth Smith-Hillis moved from Bourbon/KY to Maury TN (that eventually became Marshall County), where they both died in 1840 and 1843, resp. Samuel Hillis, Sr. and wife Ann Luckey named their children in order: Sampson, Robert, John, Ann, Elizabeth, Samuel Jr., Martha and Palser. I know that there was a minister of some importance by the name of Sampson Smith, so of course I wonder if he could have been my Elizabeth's father? Other known surnames associated with this Hillis/Luckey group in addition to Baldridge, Pendry, Sleven, and Smith are Boyd, Naylor, Logue, Osborn, and possibly Butler (Boettler). I would be grateful for any hints, thoughts, or suggestions anyone might have about my Elizabeth Smith... Thank you, Donna Crosby Notify Administrator about this message?
