Hi All,

Pte Roy John Schmidt was my grandmother's brother-in-law and was killed in action while serving the the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion along the Sanananda Track on January 4, 1943.

He is now buried at the Bomana War Cemetery, Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.

Although I have a copy of his service record and have visited both his grave and the areas where he served (and was killed), I still have very little information about him.

According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, he was the "Son of Alfred Ernest and Elsie Schmidt; husband of Reta May Schmidt, of Howlong, New South Wales." Reta May Schmidt (nee Batson) was my grandmother's sister, and they had one daughter, Irene (b. 1942).

I'm currently trying to obtain a photo of him from his daughter.

If anyone may have any further information regarding Pte Schmidt or his family, please feel free to contact me. I also have a number of digital photos of his grave, as well as the approximate area where he was killed if anyone is interested.

Kind regards,

Daniel Leahy
