See the reason I am asking you to narrow things down is that, at this point, the name is too common and the dates and even the places are too vague and general so that it's like looking for a needle in a haystack. The "haystack" is this big: with the dates not narrowed down and a family of men named Schmidt who were German sailors in the Great Lakes area, you could even be related somehow to Heinrich Schmidt who settled in 1784 in Lake Ontario(?) and for whom Smith Bay is named. You may say that 1784 is too early but remember that names get repeated in families and there were all these uncles or brothers and anyway haven't really got Heinrich's own lifespan narrowed down yet.
Then there are a lot of biographies and obituaries for Schmidts but you haven't given enough first names to narrow them down that way: look at http://www.2manitowoc.com/biosSchm.html and www.2manitowoc.com/ObitsSchm.html since some of the Schmidts who settled in Wisconsin could be related look for Schmidts and read their family stories for ideas.
Then there are strange coincidences in the Knopf family history: Elizabeth Knopf b abt 1837 Tonawanda NY d Perrysburg m [Johann] Adam Schmidt son of Gutav and Sophia Schmidt and had a son Philipp David b1863 which sounds so similar to Henry Smith b1863 son of Adam Smith and Eliz Knopf that I thought I'd mention it so you try searching the Knopf family histories online too...
