Elena Could Henry have been the son of Adam Smith and Elizabeth Knopf born West Perrysburg, Cattaraugus NY? It is somewhat confusing that he could have been born in the US in 1863 if the family originated with Heinrich Schmidt who left Hamburg, Germany in the LATE 1800s. You may have information you did not include because you did not think that it would be important to anyone trying to help you. But you might be surprised by what would help someone attempting to find information for you. For instance, the particulars of Henry's death: date, place, burial, et cetera might be helpful. Believe it or not, even his wife's/widow's name and dates, the names and dates (and places) of his children. There may have been an application for widow's benefits, the recording of a deed, the probating of a will. The more details you can offer, the more people will be able to help you. (You say "two different families" on either side of the lake: Lake Michigan? But specifically which states and do you have any town names? names of specific wives or children, any dates for them? ) Do you have any idea what state around Lake Michigan Heinrich might have been based? Even an idea of which state he might have lived in, registered his vessel in, or been buried in? Names, dates, places of any other relatives? Distant great-uncles and -aunts, distant cousins? Any idea of church affiliations? Anything more that you can think of...you'd be surprised what can be helpful. Most of all we need to narrow down the range of time that Heinrich might have lived. Your best guess as to how old he was in the "late 1800s" when he left Hamburg. Because the more you can narrow down names like Smith and Schmidt the better. There are likely many men during that general time period with that combination of first and last name. So anything more you've got, please post it. Anastasia Notify Administrator about this message?
