Heinrich Schmidt Hamburg Germany?

I have been tiredly searching for my mom's side of the family for too long and would like some help! My mother's maiden name was smith and my Grandmother had done alittle research on the smith side going to Henry Laurence Smith born July 1863 In New York (later resisided in Racine, WI)... I have found this to be factual. But there is one problem... i can't go any further than him! My great aunt told me that Henry's brother's may have been merchant Marines??? My uncle tells me: "I was told that the smiths in the US started with a certain captain (or first mate) named Heinrich Schmidt who came from hamburg in germany. He left Germany for unamed reasons in the late 1800's and sailed Lake Michigan for many years. The story goes that he had two different families, one in the north part of the lake and one in the south (that would be our family). The two different wives never knew about each other until he died and so perhaps that is why the family history is a little sketchy on him."
please help me find more information on heinrich if you can... i know that this story might not even be factual but my grandfather's parents never really told him much so i don't have much to go on... please help!!!!- Elena
