Schmidt/McClain in Houston/Stewart Tenn

I recently began researching my husbands genealogy. I had been stuck only 2 generations back because my husband knew very little of his family history and knew his grandmother by Lorraine. While visiting his sister in Michigan, I noticed she referred to her as Kate. When I returned home I began a new search for Ruben Schmidt, my husband's grandfather. On previous searches I had found nothing that could link my husbands grandfather Ruben to any I found in records online. Until last week. I came upon and excerpt from a book that included a history on the McClain family and it stated that a Catherine Lorraine Schmidt, known as Kate, married Ruben Schmidt and moved to Detroit and had 2 children: Jimmy and Kathy.

There is a family history online that includes a Ruben Schmidt, born the same time period of my Ruben, married to an Emma Rushing, in 1923, with no further information on this couple, but outlines Ruben's ancestors as coming from Denmark with his father being Jens Peter Jorgensen Schmidt, and his mother Lottie L. Weaver, born in TN.. My husband always said that they arrived here from Germany, but Denmark would make sense as well. He says that Ruben was married prior to his marriage to Kate McClain, and had a son, Major Nolan Schmidt. He then married Kate and they moved to Detroit where Ruben James and Kathy were born.

Any information on any of these lines or on where to access records would be greatly appreciated.
