I think by "Captain" Dewalt you mean "Captain" DAVID Smith of North Carolina?

First the Heimbach Schmidts:

I. Hans Veit Schmidt b 1660 Heimbach, Sankt Wendel, Rhineland Preussen but formerly capital of the old duchy of Julich whose ducal line died out before the Thirty Years' War c 1609? d 30 May 1720 m 1680 Eva Agnes of Ruschberg at Baumholder, Sankt Wendel 4 miles away from Heimbach. Seven years after their marriage, when their son Michael was four and their daughter Anna Katharina was a baby(?) (born yet?) the town of Heimbach together with the castle (Hengebach Castle) burned and only the town was rebuilt. There were seven children. Where Johann is a first name, it was only a saint's name and they went by their middle name.

II. seven children of Hans Veit Schmidt:
1 Michael b 1683 d 27 Dec 1729 m Maria Catharina and had seven children:
.......III. seven children of Michael:
.........1 (Hans) Heinrich chr 20 Apr 1709 m 15 Jan 1737 Marie Eva Goettsche (listed as Eva Gosch aboard the Edinburgh 15 Sep 1749)
.........2 (Johann) Nickel (Nicholas?) b 23 Apr 1711 m 1 May 1731 Maria Catharina Wentz* note: a Peter Schmid (acceptable variation) m Elsabeth Ehrhard or Wentz and had a son Peter b 16 Feb 1814 York PA
.........3 Maria Catharina b 1714 d 24 Jun 1719
.........4 (Johann) Peter b 21 Apr 1716* note: still not identified with any of the Peters arrived in PA
.........5 (Anna) Maria b May 1718 d 30 Jun 1735
.........6 Elise Catharina b 1721 d 4 Jan 1733
.........7 Theobald/Dewalt/Daywalt chr 14 Mar 1724 d 1780 Conestoga Twp York PA m 10 Sep 1743 Evangelisch Katzweiler in Pfalz Bayern(Palatinate Bavaria) 36 miles away from Heimbach to Magdalena Karsten had four sons: Adam, Fred, Wilhelm and Philip??
2 Anna Katharina 1687
3 (Johann) Heinrich 1690
4 Anna Margaretha 1692
5 (Johann) Theobald 1695 * note: this would have also been a Theobald, yes, for whom his nephew b 1724 was named;however, not likely to be "Capt" David Schmitt who was b 1730 Rowan NC!
6 Anna Maria 1697
7 Sebastian 1699

POSSIBLE generation IVs:

a Peter Schmitt (spelling variation) m 7 Feb 1775 York PA to Barbara Schram

a Peter b 1765 Rural York PA d 1815 m Barbara had 3rd son Peter b 1795

A Peter Schmid (acceptable variation) m Elis. Erhard or Wentz! (see gen. III above;however THAT Peter was b 1716, almost a hundred years earlier!) and had a son Peter b 16 Feb 1814 York PA (Nickel's or Nicholas's? wife was a Wentz from Heimbach)

John Schmid (var.) b 1751 Lancaster PA m Susanna had son Peter b 23 Sep 1777

Adam Schmit m Machtalena had son Peter b 20 Dec 1801 Shrewsbury Twp York Pa

NOW the NC line:

"Capt" (?) DAVID Smith or Schmitt NOT Dewalt! b Nov 1730 Rowan NC d 2/5 May 1787 m 1750 (Anna) BARBARA Hedderich/Leonhard(t) (1731- Sep 1804) had a son also David Smith b 16 May 1753 d 12 Oct 1823 bur Beck's Ch Cem Davidson Co NC m Susannah Ann Meyers

*note: "Anna" was often a first name ignored, just like "Hans" and "Johan"with the boys, and the middle name was used instead.
