Hi BJ,
I do have a Fred Martin Schmidt (b.1867 in Prussia)in my family, But he married an Ella Florence Parke (b. 1871 in Canton, SD). They lived in Lincoln County and had Arthur Dean, Perry Bryan, Fred Leroy, Laura Elizabeth, and another daughter.
I don't have a Herman in my tree, and I don't see any connection between your Schmidt's and mine. Although I don't see a connection, they may be related somehow. I'll keep checking.
If you know what county in South Dakota they moved to try checking this web sight.
