Cheney Free Press, Cheney, Washington, Spokane county, Friday, July 28, 1916. ALOIS SCHMIDT DIES FROM EFFECTS OF CANCER Alois Schmidt died at his home Sunday morning of cancer. While Mr. Schmidt was known to be suffering from the ailment for some time past, his death came as a surprise to most of his acquaintances, who had not supposed that the disease had reached such an acute stage. Mr. Schmidt was born in Germany 55 years ago. He located in Cheney about 15 years ago, taking over the Weber brewery, which he operated until the going into force of the local option law, which forced the closing of the plant. Later Mr. Schmidt remodeled the building in which the brewery plant has housed, converting it into a lodging house and hotel. Himself and wife had since resided there until his death on Sunday. We are told that the only surviving relatives of the dead man, aside from Mrs. Schmidt, reside in Germany. The body was taken to Spokane Sunday in charge of the Hazen-Jaeger Undertaking company, where burial was made.
