Hi from Kent in England. I've just discovered that my great-great-grandfather, Friedrich Ludwig Wilhelm Ernst Schleicher (born Corbach, Germany 1818) left Bremen by ship for Adelaide in Australia in 1848. He was naturalised the same year. A child was born to his wife, Henriette Caroline, on the journey but died - another, Elizabeth Emily, died in Adelaide in 1851. Friedrich was a merchant. I have found a letter in the National Archives of Australia that suggest in 1859 they were living in Melbourne. My great-grandfather, Friedrich Ferdinand Martin Schleicher, had been born in Hamburg in 1846 - he must have travelled with them but I have found no record. What I do know is that at some stage before 1870 he changed his name to Frederick Ferdinand Martin Schleicher Thornton - the first mention I have of him in the UK was when he was being ordained in Chichester. He went on to have a distinguished career in the church, ending up as Canon Emeritus of Ely Cathedral. If anyone has any ideas, thoughts or knowledge of the family, I'd love to hear from you! Regards, Robin Thornton Notify Administrator about this message?
