Isaac Sanders, Jackson County, Alabama

Nearly every Web site I have consulted gives 1808 as the year of birth for Isaac Sanders, one of the sons of Francis and Rachel Sanders of Jackson County, Alabama. I have found no documentary evidence for this date. Apparently, an early researcher provided the 1808 date and everyone else has been copying it without question.

In fact, the available documentary evidence suggests that Isaac, the son of Francis and Rachel, was born about 1818 in Randolph County, North Carolina. There was an Isaac Sanders in Randolph County who married a Mary Kimbro in 1825, but I do not believe that Isaac is the same Isaac as the son of Francis and Rachel, though he may well have been related to the same Sanders line. The evidence I have been able to find for the life of Isaac, son of Francis and Rachel, is given below.

The first evidence of Isaac Sanders is the 1840 Jackson County census. There is one Isaac Sanders listed with age range of 20-30, one female in the household age 20-30 (presumably his wife Elizabeth), and one male child, age 0-5 (presumably son Aaron, born 1838). Isaac appears to be living next door or close to a Benjamin Sanders, age 70-80. This Benjamin is assumed to be the grandfather of the Levi Lindsey Sanders who moved to Van Zandt County, Texas and who was a friend of Isaac’s son Jesse who moved to Henderson County, Texas.

John Sanders (1822, North Carolina-August 11, 1896, Jackson County, Alabama), who is known without question to have been the son of Francis and Rachel, stated on the Southern Claims record that his brother Isaac, who lived in Montgomery County, Arkansas, had fought for the South during the Civil War, though John had remained loyal to the Union.

A letter written by Louie Richard Davis of Weatherford, Texas on July 24, 1974 to friends in Scottsboro, Jackson County, Alabama, states " There is another story told about two of the Sanders. The story goes that the two brothers were fighting during the War Between the States. One had enlisted with the Union Army and the other was serving with the Confederates. They were mounted and fighting and charging with sword and sabre. It was night and dark and they did not recognize each other, or who they were fighting against. One of them said 'Get Ert Aunt Becky,' and the other said 'Is that you, John?' and they then recognized each other as being brothers and stopped fighting. They had an aunt called Aunt Becky who had a 'By-Word' of Get Ert. I have a note of a John Sanders serving with Co. B. 3rd Ohio Regiment (Union Army). “ (From July 2000 issue of the magazine “Sanders Siftings.”)

The 1860 Montgomery County, Arkansas census shows an Isaac Sanders living near Mt. Ida with his wife Elizabeth, sons Aaron, Isaac, Benjamin , Jesse, Calvin, and daughters Amanda, Sarah, and Rebecca. During the Civil War, Sanders from Montgomery County served in the "Montgomery County Hunters," a unit of the Confederate Army that was Co. F of the 4th Arkansas infantry. The record lists: Aaron Sanders, Benjamin Sanders, Isaac Sanders...died illness or injury. Apparently, these are the sons of Isaac.

The 1870 Booneville, Prentiss County, Mississippi census shows Isaac Sanders and Elizabeth living with their children Sarah, Rebecca, and Calvin. Also living in the household is Mary born 1849 in Mississippi. She is apparently Calvin's wife and their child is Rebecca born in September 1869 Jesse is not listed in the 1870 census because he had already left for Henderson County, Texas.

The 1880 Booneville, Prentiss County, Mississippi census has Isaac Sanders and Elizabeth in the household with Sarah and Rebecca and a grandaughter Martha A. born 1877. Living next door to Isaac and Elizabeth is Mary, listed as as a widow. Apparently, her husband, Calvin Sanders, died between 1874 and 1880. She is living with her children Rebecca born in 1869, Mary born in 1872, Sarah E born 1874, and Isaac, born 1874. Also living nearby is Isaac’s oldest son Aaron and his wife Hestie.

The 1860, 1870 and 1880 census reports all suggest a date of about 1818 for Isaac’s birth and 1817 for the birth year of Elizabeth. The 1880 census is the last documentary record of Isaac and Elizabeth. It is interesting to note that the census taker in 1880 recorded under occupation for the 63 year old Elizabeth that she was "bedridden with dyspepsia." Isaac and Elizabeth do not appear on the 1900 Mississippi census and the assumption is that they died before 1900. .

Children of ISAAC SANDERS and ELIZABETH are:
       1.       AARON SANDERS, b. 1838, Jackson County, Alabama; d. Nov. 28, 1902, Booneville, Mississippi.
       2.       ISAAC SANDERS, b. 1841, Jackson County, Alabama; d. Bef. 1865, Montgomery county, Arkansas.
