Rose,

If you are not familiar with the FHL Family Search
catalog, here is the link:
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/library/fhl/frameset_library.asp

You really have to work with the system. Names are not
always exactly as you expect them to be spelled. When you
do find a matching record, if there is a Batch Number at
the lower left hand of the record, click on it, click "refine" your search, type in the surname you
are researching and you will come up with all the people
of the same surname who were baptised/or married in a
particular parish for a particular time period. You
may not find the records that you are searching for
but you may come up with names of possible relatives.
Sometimes you'll find some of those same names in
U.S. census records.

The Family History Library also has computers that
you can use to access Ancestry.com genealogy census
& other records. You can also look for a library with
a genealogy dept that has Ancestry.com or Heritage
Quest. The library that I go to allows me to access
Heritage Quest from my computer at home.

When it comes to census reocords, you have to be
creative with name spellings: Ruiz-Ruis. Rues,
Teodoro- Theodoro, Tiodoro, you get the picture.
Search surnames and given names together, or
separetely with diffeent spellings In HeritageQuest.
sometimes men are listed as "Jose" because it was
actually part of the first name, so you may need to
look for known children to find the parents.

Occasionally, just "Googling" a name&place will get you
a hit for new directions. Someone else may have already
done some research that you can use, etc, etc.

Learning the history of the area and checking timelines
(what was happening when your relatives were living)
might be helpful. To me personally, it is just as
important to understand the times that our relatives
were living in. I have found some very interesting stuff
in my research and it's like WOW!!! and sometimes it's
sad.

Excuse my getting carried away, I just love research &
it doesn't even have to be my own families.

Good Luck, Gloria
