I have Ruiz as a family name. I had always heard the pronuciation "Reese",one syllable. I listen to Public Radio every morning and about a year ago I heard a new reporter pronouce her name Ruiz as "Roo-eese". She does hesitate and you hear two clear syllables. It was the first time I heard this pronunciation. By the way, "i" in Spanish has the same long e sound in English.

The reporter was born and reared in Mexico City which is a state in southern Mexico. She now lives here in San Antonio, Texas. My family is from Nuevo Leon which is a state in northern Mexico, closer to Texas. This may be why I had commonly only heard the pronunciation "Reese".

Ruiz comes from Spain and Portugal so the pronuciation may be due to this or a regional pronunciation like the one from southern and northern Mexico. It may also just be a personal preference of the family.
