Johann Georg Ruch was born April 20, 1809 in or near Aubure, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France. He married March 22, 1831 to Maria Salome Kuhlmann in Alsace. They moved to Washington County, Ohio between 1840 and 1845.

Johann's parents were Christian Ruch (1759-1820) and Anne marie Wasser (1768-1833).
