I have a similar problem tracing the birthplace of my ancestor Samuel Reid born about 1851/2 in county Derry. Your best chance is to find Robert in the censuses of 1881, 1891, 1901 as he may have stated his exact birthplace, which would enable you to find a birth registration in Ireland more easily at http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=0

If you have not yet joined the Reid Y-chromosome test project and taken a 46-marker test, you should do it in case your results match those of another male Reid who shares common ancestors. You can join up here:
