I really don't know a great deal about Samuel M. Reese.

Here are some scattered notes.

Edwin, H.D. and Samuel Reese, along with Jeremiah Fields [a neighbor of Jacob and Absalom Reese in Pendleton District], were active in the "Union and States Rights Party" in South Carolina; see Greenville Mountaineer, 22 September 1832, p.1; 17 November 1832, p.2; 1 December 1832, pp. 2, 3; 26 January 1833, p.3; 9 February 1833, p.1; 23 February 1833, p.2; 2 March 1833, p.2; 22 August 1834, p.7. [For whatever it's worth, Edwin and H.D. Reese are NOT closely related -- if they are related at all -- to Jacob Reese, father of Absalom M. Reese].

Also, February 5, 1833 Whereas Samuel Reese hath come to live with me & on my land on Cane Creek...it is my wish that he shall remain & continue to live on my land & work with me for our joint benefit and the support of our families...I, William Whitmire Sr. ...in consideration I will give him one negro slave... Signed William Whitmire. Witnesses: Joseph Gresham, Joseph Burnett. [Pickens Co., SC, Deed Book B-1, pp. 432-433].

On 20 October 1835, "A.M. Reece" and a man named "Samuel M. Reece" witnessed a deed wherein William Whitmire of South Carolina bought land in Forsyth County from John W. Keith.
Whitmire was the uncle of Christopher Whitmire, Absalom Reese's brother-in-law. Research has not determined what relationship, if any, Samuel M. Reese bore to Absalom, but Absalom did name his youngest son "Samuel." The elder "Samuel Reese" was listed in the 1850 Forsyth County census as being a fifty-four year old native of South Carolina. (William Whitmire of SC bought for $1500, from John W. Keith, land in 14th District, 1st Section, # 214, 236, 237, 238, 40 acres each. Witnesses: Samuel M. Reece, A.M. Reece; dated 20 October 1835; recorded 6 April 1836 Forsyth Co., GA, Deed Book C, p.352)

On 7 March 1837, A.M. Reese sold some land to Samuel Reese. The property Absalom sold Samuel consisted of part of lot 317, in section one of the fourteenth land district of Forsyth County. Samuel Reese paid $75 for the land. Thomas Hitt, Absalom's brother-in-law, and David R. Hutchins witnessed the deed. Absalom and Samuel Reese did not record the deed until 7 January 1839. [Forsyth Co., GA, Deed Records, Book E, p.304]

The 1840 Forsyth Co., Ga., census shows Sameul Reese's household as including 1 boy, 10 to 15 years old, and 2 boys 15 to 20 years old. It is tempting to think these are unidentified sons of Samuel M. Reese, but, of course, they could be hired hands, nephews, or someone else.

***

The appearance together in deeds in Forsyth Co., Ga., is what makes me think that Samuel M. and Absalom M. Reese were related (plus the fact that Absalom named his youngest son Samuel].

But Absalom was the only son of Jacob Reese and Susan Harris, so Samuel was not Absalom's brother.

Jacob Reese was b. ca. 1770, so it is barely possible that Samuel M. Reese was his youngest brother (no one has found anything concrete on Jacob's parents and/or siblings), or, more likely, Samuel might have been a nephew of Jacob's. Or, of course, it's possible that they were very distantly related.

I'll check my files to see if I have anything else on Samuel M. Reese -- if he appears in the 1830 S.C. census, then it would be interesting to see if there were boys in his household, and if their ages match what is indicated in the 1840 census.

Hope this helps.

Bill
