Hello Pam: I do not believe we are talking about the same Gen. Peter B. Porter. My Peter Porter was born 8/14/1773 to Col. Joshua Porter and Abigail (Buell) Porter, and was one of six children. Col. Porter survived a total of three wives, including Jerusha Burr Fitch, the daughter of Col Aaron Burr. P.B. Porter graduated from Yale in 1791 and was an ernest advocate of the war with Great Britain in 1812. He fought in that war and afterward was appointed as Commander-in-Chief of the army by Pres. Madison, which he declined. Served in Congress 1808-1814,he was secretary of War under Pres. Madison and married Letitia Breckenridge in Sept. of 1818.They had two children, Elizabeth and Peter A. Gen. Porter died at Niagara Falls, N.Y. 3-20-1844. One of the sons of his brother,Judge Augustus Porter, with his second wife, Jane Howell Porter, was named Peter Buell Porter who died June 15, 1871 unmarried.
