From the Western Christian Advocate:
Died, December 19th, 1842, Lydia PETER, daughter of Starling and Sophia Turner, aged 37 years and 29 days. She was born in Madison county, Ky., November 26th, 1805, and removed with her parents in early life to Mercer county, Ky. In 1824 she was united in marriage to Reuben D. Peter. Sometime after, she removed to Washington county, Ky., where she died. Mrs. Peter was raised by pious and exemplary members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She joined the Church when a youth, but never had a bright evidence of her acceptance with God until a few minutes before she departed. Her sufferings were severe, but short. A few minutes before she died, one of the sisters asked her if she felt the love of God in her soul, to speak one word. Her tongue was silent, but she nodded her head; and with a sweet smile on her countenance raised her pale and emaciated hands and said "Sweet Jesus!" two or three times. Then she fell asleep in the arms of Jesus, and angels bore her happy spirit on wings of love to the paradise of God. The Spirit of God was present, and so powerful that some of the by-standers shouted aloud. It seemed that the very house was filled with the power of God. She commended her little babe, nine days old, to the care of her friends and the overruling providence of an all-wise and ever-merciful God.
R. D. Peter, Maxville, Ky., Jan. 31, 1843
