Descendants (or not) of Richard Pace of Jamestown

There are no proven descendants of Richard Pace of Jamestown.

Participants in the Pace DNA study who descend from John Pace (will proved 1727 Bertie Co NC) have been classified (on the basis of the DNA results) as Group 3A, along with descendants of Richard Pace (will proved 1738 Bertie Co NC), John Pace (d. 1825 Greenville SC), and Bignal Pace (d. by 1817, Dinwiddie Co(formerly Prince George)).

Of these four, document evidence links John Pace and Bignal Pace to Prince George County (formerly Charles City County) where Richard Pace, grandson of Richard and Isabella, is known to have lived. Circumstantial evidence (i.e., associations) link Richard Pace (d. 1738 NC) and John Pace (d. 1825 Greenville SC) to Prince George County. Therefore, it's possible that Group 3A descends from Richard and Isabella, and most researchers think it is likely, since their descendants all have matching DNA.

Participants in the Pace DNA study who descend from Burwell/Burrel Pace (son of John Pace) have been classified as Group 3B, along with descendants of William Pace (will proved Montgomery Co TN 1845), descendants of William Pace (m. Sarah Frazier) of Giles County TN), descendants of Jesse Pace (Harlan County KY), and descendants of Alsey Pace (m. Zilpha Hall).

No document evidence links John Pace (father of Burwell), William Pace, Jesse Pace, or Alsey Pace to Prince George/Charles City County where the single known grandson of Richard and Isabella Pace lived. There is a theory that John Pace, father of Burwell, came from Prince George and was a descendant of Richard and Isabella; however, there are problems with this theory, apart from the lack of evidence. For the theory to work, all the 3B descendants would have to descend from John Pace (father of Burwell) -- including William Pace of Montgomery Co TN (b. 1740-50, according to census data). It's hard to see how William Pace of TN could have been a son of John Pace, given that in his 1781 petition Burwell presents himself as heir to both his father and his brother -- i.e., the second eldest son.

Getting back to the DNA results: these show that Groups 3A and 3B share a common ancestor, but no one knows when the most recent common ancestor of the two groups lived.

It's possible that the two groups both descend from a Pace who lived and died in England, back in the 15th century or earlier. If that's what happened, then Group 3B does NOT descend from Richard and Isabella, but Group 3A probably does.

It's also possible that the two groups both descend from Richard Pace (m. Isabella) via an unidentified son or grandson. The proven eldest son of Richard and Isabella was George (d. ca 1655 Charles City County VA). George's proven eldest son was Richard (m. Mary, d. ca 1678 Charles City County VA). However, either George or Richard could have had a younger son, and if so, that son could conceivably have experienced the mutations which distinguish Group 3B, and thus become the progenitor of the 3B line. Unfortunately, no evidence has been discovered which could support this hypothesis.

The above is my understanding of the situation. I would much appreciated being informed if any of it is in error.
