The following quotation is from: Origines Parochiales Scotiae, vol 2, pp. 273-274. The quotation deals with the parish of Kilchoman, on Islay. ---- In 1535, and again in 1541, King James V, presented Sir Donald Makintagart to the chaplainry of Ilaneoirsay, vacant or when vacant by the resignation, promotion, or decease of Sir Christopher Makwia (or Makvia). 'At the west poynt of Ilay,' says Archdeacon Monro in 1549, 'lyes an iylle callit by the Erische Ellan Ouersay, ane myle in lenthe. It hath ane paroch kirke, and is very guid for fishing, inhabit and manurit, with ane right dangerous kyle and stream callit Corey Garrache; na man dare enter in it bot at ane certain tyme of the tyde, or ellis he will perish'. In 1556 Queen Mary presented Sir Neil M'Cawla chaplain to the chaplainry of the chapel of Illanorsay and Grigydill, vacant by the decease of Sir Donald M'Intagirt. ----- What would the surnames "Mackwia (or Makvia)" be? Could these be forms of 'MacAulay'? Who is "Sir Neil M'Cawla"? Is he a 'MacAulay'? Are there records of the Ardincaple MacAulays in the Hebrides? Could this man be from one of the Hebridean families of MacAulays? Notify Administrator about this message?
