I acquired a copy of this Eppard work several years ago and always wondered how anyone who accepts this viewpoint can explain that, today, if one goes into German cities and towns and asks for a telephone directory we will find the surnames Ebert and Ebbert, just as we do here. That is, by this Eppard explanation (I guess) Eppards came here, the name was changed to Ebert or Ebbert and then families returned to Germany and their descendants are now named Ebert or Ebbert? It is more reasonable to assume that people came here with BOTH Ebert, Ebbert, Eppard and, probably other variations, as surnames. In the case of the earliest Ebbert I have been able to trace, his name changes from Ebert to Ebbert depending on the census. Undoubtedly other people have also observed this same problem.
