Just saw your posting. The William E. Ebert that served in WWI from Guadalupe Co TX is probably my husband's grandfather Willie Ebert, who served in that war. He was born about 1897 and his parents were Henry Ebert and Alvina (Unknown Surname). Willie had four brothers but none of them are Herman.
However, Henry's father, Auguste (immigrated from Germany), had three sons besides Henry, so one of them could have been Herman's father.
All kinds of possibilities. There are lots of Eberts around but not so many in Texas. All the Eberts around Guadalupe County were almost certainly related at some point. If I come across a Herman, I'll let you know. My mother-in-law might know something but she just broke her hip this week and I'll let her recover a while before I ask.
