JOHN J. STOBAUGH
By Elizabeth Stobaugh Pyle

Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson Stobaugh came by train to Tishomingo, Indian Territory in the autumn of 1902 from Harrison, Arkansas. Born in Choctaw, Arkansas August 21, 1871, he had been practicing law in both Harrison and nearby Clinton following his graduation from Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee in June 1892.

Mrs. Stobaugh, the former Lovie Cox was born and reared in Lebanon, where she attended Lebanon College for Young Ladies before her marriage to Mr. Stobough on June 6, 1893. To Tishomingo they brought two young sons; Ralph White, nine years old, and Joe Pate, aged three months, who died the next summer. Interested in helping to secure the best possible environment in the community for all children, they set about helping establish a subscription school in Tishomingo.

Mr. Stobaugh was appointed United States Commissioner for the Southern District of Indian Territory in 1906.

On April 30, 1906, John J. Stobaugh and T. J. Green, Elders, and J. T. Sadler and J. W. Bailey, Deacons, as Trustees for the Church of Christ of Tishomingo, Indian Territory, purchased Lot One (1) in Block 67 in Tishomingo for the church's permanent location. This is still the site of the Church of Christ, in which both Mr. and Mrs. Stobaugh were zealous workers as long as they lived. Mrs. Stobaugh baked the communion bread; Mr. Stobaugh was the song leader and preacher on Sunday after being the janitor on Saturday. They both taught Sunday School classes, and Mr. Stobaugh soon became the group's Minister, a post he filled for nearly half a century.

Mrs. Stobaugh was a charter member if the Tishomingo Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a continuing member of American Red Cross for more than forth years. During World War I she was Needlework Chairman for Johnston County; she not only was responsible for the supplies to be allotted volunteers and took care of the in-gathering of the finished needlework, but knitted and sewed dozens of garment herself. Following the Armistice, she continued sewing for Red Cross Disaster Relief, and again began knitting for displaced persons in Europe, increasing her efforts as World War II swept over Europe and later drew the United States into the fighting.

She assisted with births and helped lay out the dead, and the lovely flowers from her own gardens brightened sickrooms, consoled the bereaved, and always were used in decorating for school graduation-time functions. Her garden she shared with all; seeds, plants, and blossoms, a hobby she continued until her death at the age of 83.

Mr. Stobaugh was a Master Mason, a member of Tishomingo Lodge No. 91 for more than fifty years. He was a member of the American Arbitration Association, and was appointed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as Advisor to Registrants, Local Board No. 35. He spent countless hours counseling with draftees during World War II and the later years of universal military training. He was actively engaged in the practice of law for over sixty years, and was a member of the State Bar of Oklahoma and the Johnston County Bar Association, filling many of its offices, including that of president in the late 1940's. He was an active lifetime member of the Republican Party, serving it in many ways. He often represented it on the elective ballot, and he was elected to the office of county attorney November 4, 1952 at the age of 81, faithfully discharging the duties of the office. He loved Oklahoma, and most of all, he loved Tishomingo, often speaking of it as "the garden spot of the world".

The couple reared three children: Ralph White, John Jackson, Junior, and Elizabeth. Ralph married Lillian Knight, and with their three children, Ralph Jr., Betty, and Lillian lived in Tishomingo until moving to Tulsa in 1932. Ralph died in Ada June 1, 1973 and Lillian, his widow, still resides there. John Jr. married Clara Belle Coast of Ramona, Oklahoma, and they live in Oklahoma City. Elizabeth married Duard Pyle of Pernell, Oklahoma, and they too, live in Oklahoma City.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Stobaugh died in August 1956 and are buried in Tishomingo Cemetery.

Karen, there is a John J. Stobaugh, born 1871, in Choctaw, Van Buren Co. Arkansas, son of William H. Stobaugh, and wife Winnie Arminta (don't have her maiden name), grandson of John J. and Sarah A. Rogers Stobaugh, great-grandson of Edmond S. Stobaugh. John J. is mentioned in his father's will in 1915 so still living then. I have nothing further on him or who he married, but it certainly looks like he might match your John J. Only one I can find in Van Buren County born 1871.

The source on this is Nina Hartsfield Ormes(my mother), Lucille Hartsfield Weimar(Shusie) and Sam Hartsfield(Uncle Sam).
Lizzie Cox Hartsfield wanted a pony and buggy. This presented a problem for her husband Ed Hartsfield because he was the first Ford dealer in Middle TN and he thought his wife shouldn't use a pony and buggy. He gave her the fanciest little Ford Runabout and told her to "learn to drive". One day while he was at the business down on Broadway in Nashville she sold the car and bought a pony and buggy. It was all done by the time Ed came home from work. The three "kids" said there were real fireworks that evening, but Ed never mentioned Lizzie learning to drive again. The pony's name was Brownie and as you know there are several pictures of him. The dog in one of the
pictures is Ladd. (There are a few photos of Elizabeth with her "pony" and at least one with it and the dog)

6. ALLIE BAIRD3 COX (BERRY WHITE2, LITTLEBERRY1) was born 27 January 1884 in TN, and died 22 April 1976 in Tishomingo, Johnston County, OK. She married RICHARD SAMUEL LEWIS FRYER 05 August 1906 in Tishomingo, Indian Territory, OK, son of ALBERT FRYER and MARTHA WEST. He was born 14 August 1886 in AR, and died 01 November 1972 in Tishomingo, Johnston County, OK.

Notes for ALLIE BAIRD COX:
Allie Baird Cox, daughter of Berry White Cox and Gabriel Green, is shown to be the spouse of Richard Samuel Lewis per information of their Granddaughter, Vera Karen White Cotter.
Born: 27 January 1884 in Tennessee per death certificate; same date on tombstone
Died: April 1976, Johnston County, OK per death certificate; 22 April 1976 per tombstone
Buried: Tishomingo City Cemetery, Tishomingo, Johnston County, OK

Allie Fryer was not a grandmotherly person and was a lady who ruled her home, children and grandchildren with an iron hand. There are photographs of her and her children when they were very young and she seemed to be a happy person. For whatever reason, she must have changed over the years of following her husband all over the state of Oklahoma. The children were born in different Oklahoma cities. Perhaps she had a back injury and her disposition in her later years could be attributed to pain. She always stood straight and it was learned in later years that she wore a hard boned corset to keep it straight. Her youngest children could do no wrong no matter what life style they chose and their oldest son could apparently do no right in her eyes. If there was any discussion about family between their children, it wasn't done in front of young ears unless they were listening when they weren't known to be so most of the information came to light after several boxes of family papers were inherited and moved from place to place without being read until about two years ago which did reveal a few family skeletons, some of which have been included in this lineage.

Died: 1 November 1972, Tishomingo, OK per death certificate; same date per tombstone
Buried: Tishomingo City Cemetery, Tishomingo, Johnston County, OK

The information about Richard S. Fryer, Sr., Allie Baird Cox and their children was provided from direct knowledge of Karen White Cotter, a direct descendent who was raised with these people and other information provided by family records in the possession of Karen White Cotter and her cousin Rhonda Fryer Cunningham. They also visited the graveyard in May 2001.

Per Juanita Gilbreath Wood, he built the first fire truck for Tishomingo, Johnston County, OK
Was partner with his father and brother John Robert Fryer in a cotton gin, J. D. Fryer and Sons, Tishomingo, Johnston County, OK
Was partner with his brother John Robert Fryer in Fryer Bros. Drayage
Was a travelling surveyor and moved around Oklahoma a lot. The children were born and schooled in several locations. When they settled down it was in Tishomingo, Johnston County, OK and they lived at 408 South Mickle. The house was sold by their daughters after their mother died, and the possessions that they didn't bring home with them were auctioned off. The house is still standing and hasn't changed that much though the yard seems to be a lot smaller than remembered by grandchildren who played outside. There were extremely large cottonwood trees and fireflies in the memory of one grandchild.

Information about Vera Louis Fryer came from personal knowledge of Vera Karen White, her niece and Family Bible in possession of another niece, Rhonda Cunningham.

She was red haired and freckled and most social of the sisters. She and Fred had no children though she was mother to her nephew, Richard Earl Karr during his high school years. She lied about her age when she went to work and was sensitive about it. As a result, the sisters also kept their ages "secret" and if a child asked how old any of the sisters were, there was never an answer. She had to tell the truth when she retired from her job to get her railroad pension. This was before she developed Alzeimers but it developed a few years after and she was cared for by her sister Lovie Mai though was put in a care facility later on after her own health failed.

It is believed that she always wanted to be a writer and if the following is any example, she might have succeeded. None of her other stories survived.

THINGS AND PEOPLE OF TISHOMINGO I REMEMBER by Vera Fryer Bass

The first that I remember of Tishomingo was in 1912, when we first moved to Tishomingo from Ada, Oklahoma. At that time the highway was through the woods and had to go over the bridge at Pennington and around the rocks at the western part of Tishomingo and then on to Ravia. We came from Ravia to Tishomingo on a hack driven by horses. The thing I remember most about if was the darkness.

We stayed for a while at my grandparents, whose house was the last house in Tishomingo on the Ravia Road. My grandfather was J. D. Fryer and he and my grandmother had eight children. Four of them passed away in childhood. The ones left were Mamie Caroline, Alma, J. Robert Fryer, Richard Fryer (my father) and Margaret Fryer.

Minnie (that was the name we used for her (Mamie Caroline)) married J. M. Green. They had four children: John F. Ruby, Caroline and William Green. Minnie died in 1912 and is buried at Tishomingo. J. M (Mack) Green was injured at the city pump station while on duty and died from his injuries July 10, 1918. He, also, was buried at Tishomingo. Mack Green was the first person to go over the swinging bridge in a vehicle, which at that time was a horse and buggy.

Alma Fryer married Robert White and they had four children: Mattie, Lucy, Pauline and Alice White.

J. R. Fryer (Bob) married Ollie Loveless and they had three sons; Roy, Robert and J. W. Fryer. Robert died in the flu epidemic in 1918. J. W. died later at age 44 years. Roy Fryer married Dixie Harris, and they had, to the best of my knowledge, five children. Two passed away, Robert and Alma Lee.

Ruby Green, daughter of Minnie and Mack, married Ernest Mullins and lives at Idabel, Oklahoma. Her sister, Caroline, married Eldred Doty and had three children; Eldred Jr., Robert and Carol. All three are now married.

William Green never married. He makes his home with his sister Mrs. Eldred Doty at Dickenson, Texas.

John Green first married Marie Orr, who died a short time after their marriage. Later he married Frances Bates, no children. John died in 1974.

Richard S. Fryer married Allie Cox, who previously was from Nashville, Tennessee. She was sister to Mrs. J. J. Stobough, another Tishomingo pioneer. The Stoboughs lived at the end of Kemp Ave. in a large two story home which is still standing.

My parents bought a house from some people named Bunch. They lived there until their deaths. It is located now at 408 S. Mickle St. and is the home of Mr. And Mrs. Lewis Parkhill.

Richard and Allie had six children. Lovie Mai married Earl Karr of Vinita, Oklahoma. They had one son Richard Earl Karr. Vera married Fred L. Bass of Tishomingo. Juanita married W. A. White of Ardmore. The had one child Vera Karen. Dorothy married Robert Reilly in California.

Richard married Audene Hill in Tishomingo. Audene was later killed in a car wreck at Vinita, Oklahoma, where Richard and Son ran a theater. Richard managed the Thompson Theater at Tishomingo at the time he married Audene. Later Richard and Audene moved to Grove, Oklahoma. Richard later married and had one daughter, Rhonda. Rhonda is now married to a man named Cunningham and lives near Grove, Oklahoma.

Farris (Jack) married Margaret Agee at Vinita and they had one daughter, Ardyth Ann, who now lives at Grant's Pass, Oregon.

My father (Richard S. Fryer, Sr.) made the first fire truck that Tishomingo had. My grandfather (John D. Fryer) built the old Opera House that was close to where Lafittes Drug now stands. My father and Bob Fryer had a gin in Tishomingo which was previously J. D. Fryer & Sons. Across the street from the gin was Shirley Smith, who also owned a gin. At that time Tishomingo easily supported two gins.

On our side of Pennington Creek lived a number of families I remember. They were Mr. And Mrs. John Deaton and Mrs. Henson (Mrs. Deaton's mother). Deatons had three children, John, Gracie and Henry. Down closer to the creek lived Mr. And Mrs. Jim Loper and daughter Theresa. Two brothers had a Soda Plant just across the creek on the right side going to town. Mr. and Mrs. Elis Dick lived next to the Deatons. Mrs. Ellis Dick was related to the Lopers. Mr. and Mrs. George Kingsberry lived up next to the woods, which is now W. 14th St. across from J. D. Fryer's place. Mr. and Mrs. Trotter lived across from the Kingsberry's. They had a daughter Velma who married Hal Stamps. Mrs. Mack Rutherford was another daughter. There was a son, Clarence T. Mr. and Mrs. Seth Moore lived up on the hill, where Russell Trammel now lives. They had several children, George, Bertha, Alva, Florence, Mallie and Edna.

People by the name of "Hill" lived where Mrs. W. L. Hamilton now lives. They were Indians and had three sons at that time.

There was a train through Tishomingo then - and we spent some very pleasant times going up to where the railroad tracks were and the bridge crossed Pennington Creek. My father (Richard S. Fryer, Sr.) came to several close calls (on this railroad bridge). At one time he worked at the ice plant and walked over the bridge, as it was much closer to our house and the plant. I went to school with a boy by the name of Homer Roundtree. He and his uncle were walking over the bridge when a train came upon them. The uncle jumped and caught Homer in such a way that he was killed. Homer fell on his uncle and only had severe injuries.

Dr. Ledgerwood lived diagonal from where we lived and they had children: Pryor, Grace, Anna Mae, Jamie, Ethel, Helen, Lillian and Safford.

I often think how pretty Pennington Creek looked then. The water was clear and was rippling as it went o down to the Washita River. When I was in Tishomingo last it was so murky and all you could see was carp. When we were youngsters we often caught a supply of perch, some quite large, and our mothers would cook them for us. Perch have never tasted like those did.

When the gravel haulers took gravel from the Creek close to the swinging bridge; a hold would be left and most of learned to swim there. Up the hill from the creek was a spring that had very cool water. Before the ice plant was there may people would walk over the bridge and get cool water to drink.
Kingsberry pasture was so pretty then also. In the spring Dad would take us all through the woods to pick violets and we would all come home with a big bunch of violets. They didn't look like wild violets but more like domestic ones. A very deep purple.

In the fall, after the first frost, Dad would take us back to the woods with a flour sack to pick up hickory nuts. On cold winter nights we would crack the hickory nuts and pop corn that my father had raised, with good country butter melted and poured over them.

The children of today do not realize the fun that we had then. All the fruit and vegetables we raised ourselves. My how good the tasted and how proud we were of the things we personally grew in the gardens for the family and friends to enjoy.

Bungie and Essie Chapman lived at the northeast of the block, just across from the Fryer place. The Senior Mr. Chapman grew tobacco there. He was Bungie's father. Bungie at that time had an automobile dealership. At the other end of the lot lived people by the name of Lindsay. One I remember was named Sheb Lindsay and one daughter was named Lavinia, another Gertha.

In the area next to the creek, which is called "The Park" was all woods, except for a small house in the center of it, where a Grace Crowell lived. From what we understood she was a writer. We were all afraid of her because some one told us that she was an old maid. We made the mistake of calling her that and she was always fussing at us. She had a white Spitz dog that we were very afraid of.

QUEEN CORONATION PAGEANT CLIMAXES STUNT NIGHT FROLIC

Yorick Players Present Oriental Selection to Win Prize

As the climax to the first annual Stunt Nite, n Valentine Day, Elvira Parker, senior, was crowned Queen of Hearts, and Queen of the Ponkus. Stunt Nite was sponsored by the yearbook staff, under the direction of Farron Turner, Supervisor of the annual, to defray expenses.

The coronation served as the last act of the entire show, and was introduced as a game of cards, in which Ralph Abbot, as the King of Hearts, discovered that the Queen of Hearts was missing, and with the aid of the Jack of Hearts, Gurney Cox, and the Deuce, Leo Dixon, saw three cards in a large lace valentine behind which were the three candidates for Ponkus queen, Julia Elkouri, Elvira Parker and Edna Carr.

Wear Card Costumes
Other cards who played in the game were Freeman Yount, Joe Sanders, Murray Woolford, Elbert Baldwin, Neal Callahan, Kenneth Stanley and J. D. Evans. Each character wore pieces of cardboard with reproductions of the face and back of the card he represented.

Of the ten acts entered by high school clubs, "By the Beard of the Prophet" staged by the Yorick Troupe was given first place by the three judges. This was a play written by Woodson Tyree, dramatics instructor, and presented by Vernon Heize, Esther Rich, John Cole, Marion Rich, and Idabelle Bennett.

"The Fatal Quest", a farce given by the Speakers Bureau, won second place. Characters in this stunt were Leo Dixon, Jane Browne, Lucile Covington, Virginia Smith, John Hardin, Joe Sanders, Bob Smith, and Henrietta Boylan. "La Danse de la Balle", sponsored by the Dynamiters under the supervision of Miss Anne Louise Cowan and Miss Polly Dinning, won third place. It was a dancing basketball game in which Barbara Pickerell, Charlene Handley, Edith craghead, Mary Willa Heald, Frnces McGowen, Lucerne Washborn, Maurine Bennett, Ona Cales, Charlotte Crockett and Helen Reynolds took parts.

Others Give Stunts
"Sweethearts on Parade", a pageant of beautiful women in history, was given by the Historical Drama club, under the supervision of Miss Celest Noel, its sponsor. A dance and song act, in which a ballet chorus of boys took part was presented by J. H. Crosby's Gass Hounds. The F.F.O. club, sponsored by R. N. Wall, gave the barn scene from "Arkansas", and the Spanish club, under Mrs. F. A. Jennings, dramatized a song, "The Gay Cabellero". 'Homo Qui Longe Domo Suo Est", the Latic club's stunt, sponsored by Miss Catherine Nowlin, was a play in which all characters spoke in Latin. The Girl Reserves staged a play, "In a Valentine Box", sponsored by Miss Maudie Stacey, and Yorick Workshow gave a skit called "In Old Joe's Barrom".

Scenery for the coronation was painted by Miss Christine Elrod and the show was staged by Woodson Tyree and the stage crew. Gayle Harris was business manager for the production.

Birth and death dates from his death certificate. They migrated from Oklahoma to California during World War II to work in the defense industry. He worked as a Welder in Kaiser Shipyards and lived in housing in Richmond, CA. Because his skill was needed in the shipyard he was deferred from joining any of the Armed Forces. He even quit once to see if he'd be called up but he wasn't. After the war was over they moved to Roseville, CA to live with his sister-in-law sister Vera and her husband, until they bought a house of their own at 329 Berkely Ave, Roseville, CA. After he and Juanita divorced, he made his home in Phoenix, AZ and worked as an automobile mechanic. He wasn't much for keeping in touch with his family so his daughter contacted the Phoenix, AZ police department from time to time to check on his well being and that's how they knew to contact her when he died. WE'RE TICKLED PINK to see Pinkey and Margaret Fryer open the new ice ceam depot just east of this office. The two young people, only lately being "oned" by the parson, have a good shop. We'd like to see them make a "go of it". But we haven't as yet, found out who is the captain of their marital (spelled it martial) barkentine on the sea of marital bliss. We could guess, however. How about an ice cream cone, Pinkey?
