Herbert Schmidt, 88, of 437 Wildwood Drive died at 9:40 p.m. March 9 at St. Joseph Hospital. He was a retired capenter and superintenden of Ottumwa Mill and Construction Co. He was born at Keokuk on March 24, 1889, to Alfred and Barbara Hohl Schmidt. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 888 and Carpenters Local 767. He married Marie Christine Veith Oct. 19, 1910, in Keokuk and she died in 1976. He lived here most of his life. Survivors: sons Herbert of Milwaukee and Richard of Ottumwa; daughters Maxine Rumbaugh of Ottumwa, Catherine Torrens of Santa Anna, Calif., and 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Service: 10 a.m. Monday at St Patrick's Catholic Church, the Rev. Paul Hart celebrating a Mass of the Resurrection. Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Rosary: Sunday, 7:30 p.m. at Jay Funeral Home Pallbearers: Knights of Columbus members.
