Hello Carolyn: I'm researching family of my late husband who was probably the youngest grandson of Maria Frederika Krumm who married William Freihofer, both of them German born, emigrating to USA. Perhaps all of Maria Frederika's children were born in New Jersey (Bridgeton, Cumberland Co., but William Freihofer and Maria Frederika removed to Philadelphia, PA, where Wm. died in 1902 and wife some time later. Maria F's father, as remembered by a family member, was William Krumm, and mother was Carolyn. (From another family source, Maria Frederika was said to be the daughter of Christian Krumm. Perhaps he was an uncle (?), see below.). Her siblings are remembered as: Chris (Christian), Carolyn, Kate (Katrina probably), and William. My source lives in Philadelphia now, and some of the descendants remained in the area; others removing to New York, etc. Two of their sons, William and Charles established very successful Freihofer Baking Companies, one of which still exists, the other one sold. My husband's father became very ill in his 40's, sold his business and retired early to California, thus not participating in the prosperity of the others - but then, California is a good place to live! I have checked immigration records have not found Maria F's name there. From another Freihofer family source, living in NY & FL, in a letter of April, 2000, she makes the following comments: "I can confirm that William (Freihofer, husband of Maria F.) operated a saloon in Philadelphia and made life difficult for his wife, Frederika, as he had a drinking problem. His son, Charles Frederick, never allowe3d liquor in his home. I know that the Krumms had a dairy in Philadelphia and employed Charles Frederick at the age of thirteen so he could help out his mother. I did not know that the Krumms also took in John Christian (my husband's father; John Christian's job was delivering milk from one of the horse-drawn carts used at the time.). John Christian and Fredericka Amelia, children of Wm. Freihofer & Maria F.(Krumm), made several trips to visit family in Germany and I have the following note as given to my husband from his aunt Amelia (above): "Grandmother Krumm's family had a large flour mill in Germany at Grozingen, name engraved over doorway. Great grandfather on Maria Frederika's side had a tile factory. Amelia and John (above) had a cousin Otto Krumm at Stuttgart, who had a large noodle factory. He was a big man. He was a cousin to Maria Frederika Krumm (wife of Wm. Freihofer)." I hope eventually to find time to work further on the line if I can get some more definite information. Hopefully the above may be a helpful clue and I shall immensely appreciate any help on this Krumm line, or any related Krumms, here or in Germany. Lorna Freihofer |
