Dear Ms. James,

I don't think this is right. In my notes, I have that James Carrigan, Jr., son of James Carrigan, Sr. (1714/6-1793)and Isabel Brown (1726-1804), who came from Cootehill, County Cavan, Ireland, was born c. 1770, in Hawfields, (what is now Alamance Co., NC) and he married a lady named Margaret, whose maiden name is not known to me. He died in Cabarrus Co., NC in 1840. I think the James Carrigan who married Jane Sample belonged to some other Carrigan family, and they ended up in Tennessee. James Carrigan, Sr. and Isabel Brown lived and died at Coddle Creek, on the border between present day Cabarrus and Iredell Counties, and they are both buried at the Coddle Creek Presbyterian (now ARP) Church, near Mooresville, NC.

I descend from James Carrigan, Jr. and Margaret through their daughter, Mary "Polly" Carrigan (c.1799-bef.1850) who married William S. Van Pelt (c.1799-1851) in Cabarrus Co. in 1821. They had ten children, some of whose names certainly suggest descent from this line. Their children were: James Simpson Van Pelt (1822-1864, killed in War, m. Sarah Amanda Minster), John Richard Van Pelt (1824-1911, m. 3 times), Margaret Isabel Van Pelt (c.1825-aft.1900, m. Charles Van Pelt, a cousin), unknown son born betw. 1826/30, William Carrigan Van Pelt (1828-1900, m. Harriet Simms), Mary Jane Van Pelt (1831-1905, m. Levi Bell, my line), Thomas S. Van Pelt (c.1834-aft.1900, m. Nancy J. Douglass), Hugh Franklin Van Pelt (c.1835-1863, killed in War), Samuel Ely Van Pelt (1838-1907, m. Isabella M. Douglass, sister to Nancy), unknown daughter born betw. 1836/40, gone by 1850.

Mary Jane Van Pelt married Levi Bell (1812-1893) in 1858, as his second wife. They had six children. They and most of their children are buried at the Coddle Creek Church where James Carrigan, Sr. and Isabel Brown are buried. The children were: Minnie (Minerva?) Bell (1860-1892, m. Ernest A. Benson), Mary Rhetta Bell (1862-1947, m. Ernest Marion Field, my line), Margaret Bell (1864-1949, m. Samuel P. Kerr), James Neal Bell (1867-1929, never married), Woodley Fain Bell (1869-1959, m. Columbus Williamson Ritch) and Elizabeth Isabella Bell (1870-1888, never married).

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
