Thanks -- I had forgotten to count the Mary enumerated as John B.'s wife in 1860. There's also that marriage for a John B. Carpenter to Matilda Ann Swingle on 26 Mar 1863 in Effingham Co. IL whom I don't see in the census. I also wondered if he could be the Braselton Carpenter -- John Braselton Carpenter -- but the published record seems to reflect a lot of certainty that his middle name was Braden.

His death was reported in the Springfield newspaper, so the assumption is that he died in Greene Co. MO, or at least in the area served by that newspaper.

John B.'s not in my Carpenter line -- like you, I enjoy the chase.
