This is interesting to say the least.

In my tracking John through the censuses it appears that his second wife was named Mary, bc 1818 in Tenn, and he would have married her circa 1850-1860, probably in Effingham County but the closest possibility in the Ancestry site is one Braselton Carpenter to Sarah Wright, married there in 1860. John's kids are still in Eff. Co. in 1870 but I can't find him that year and then in 1880 it appears he is in Washington Co., Ark. but the age given for him is wrong.
Now your info indicates he died abt 1890. Where at? Ark? Missouri?
If Mary Mott is the "step-mother" that Anna mentions then she should actually be a 3rd wife.

By the way. Is this your Carpenter line or do you just like the chase as do I?
