I wondered the same thing, but Madison's father was born in VA [1850, 1860] and his mother in VA [1850] or MD [1860, 1870] whereas Lucinda Adeline consistently reports her parents born in IL, and his mother Elizabeth's youngest child appears from the censuses to have been born c1849 and she wasn't enumerated with a daughter Lucinda or Adeline in 1860 or 1870. So far, I haven't found her in a census prior to 1880. Thanks for your help making the Carpenter connection. --Terry
