Hi, Thanks for the reply! Julia Ann 'Indiana' Bounds, as far as seems logical, apparently married Mr. Carpenter around 1857-58 as her 1st son William was born 1858-59 and Laura Ann was born 1860-1861. Mr Carpenter more than likely died in the war, but without a 1st name it's close to impossible to locate & she didn't appear to have filed any petitions for a pension claim - haven't found full confirmation on the kids birth dates yet and not sure if ever will. Do know that Laura Ann is Dec 13, but actual year may be in question. She married Samuel (who was 10 years her junior) in 1868. They were neighbors to Peter and Harriet Burrough in the 1870 Census - Harriet being her sister - in Hot Springs, AR. She probably met Samuel while living with Peter & Harriet, I would assume as a widow with 2 children, but may originally have moved while Mr. C. on active duty, too, and unknown how long a widow. William & Samuel were only 10-11 years apart in age, so there is the possibility that William took on the Parker last name, but Laura Ann did marry P.J. as "Carpenter" in Antioch, Hot Springs, AR, 1880. Phillip Jackson Burrough was Joel Ashmore Burrough's son by his first wife, Martha A. Finley. Joel is Peter's younger brother. Both families, John Bounds & John Burrough are in the 1850 Census in Yalobusha, MS - probably where the kids all met to begin with. So, conjecturing scenario: Julia Ann's sister, Harriet, marries Peter Burrough, Julia marries Mr. Carpenter, is apparently widowed, moves in with Peter & Harriet, marries Samuel, who is neighbor to Peter, then her daughter Laura marries P.J., Peter & Harriet's nephew, in Garland, AR. P.J. lists himself as a farmer and uses the spelling Burrough in the 1880 Census, They have 2 children, Walter Preston, 1881 (my grandfather) and Grace, 1884, while in AR. Some time between 1884 & 1892, P.J. earns his degree at the Nashville Medical School, which at the time was related to the University of TN and lists his graduation in 1892 from there instead of Nashville Medical. (records for the diplomas issued in the 1890's have been "misplaced") Unknown if Laura stayed behind with the kids in AR to be with family or she & the kids moved with him to TN while he studied. Kinda... No, do wish with the Fed census being at the even 10 yr mark, that the states had to do every 10 yrs as well but inbetween, so would have a 5 yr difference to follow through! Oh, well, "if wishes were nickles..." They then move to TX, have 5 more children, settling in Sipe Springs, Comanche, TX. Between 1880 & 1892 they change the spelling of their last name to Burrow or it might have been changed for him by the official writing out his diploma & he just went with it, the rest of this family seems to take on the spelling as Burrows in later years. Because Laura grew up in AR, it also may have been someone's faulty memory putting her birth there on the death cert, as the 1870 census lists hers & William's births in MS, so 'assume' met & married Carpenter there, too. We have been unsuccessful so far in locating records of any kind relating to Julia and Mr. Carpenter. My cousin was told there was Native American relations through Laura & Julia, but could only be through Mr. Carpenter. I'm thinking someone in the family also may have stretched & put some family link through Cynthia Ann Parker - no direct relation - and tied in the similarity of names. Cynthia Ann, Julia Ann, Laura Ann. It would be exciting, as Cynthia was Quanah Parker's mother, but couldn't find any kind of a link there. I noticed a lot of duplication of names & births between wives for John Bounds & tried to straighten out wives, dates & children, based on what seemed logical (yes, I know...) but question Stephen and Marion. Do you have any records in that area? It seems that a book published on the Bounds family may have had some inconsistancies rebounding (no pun intended!) and compounding tree errors downline. Any chance you might consider emailing me a copy of Laura's Death Certificate? Do you have Julia's? If not, I can email you a copy of that. Hope I haven't inundated you with too long a narrative!!! If you have other questions or would like further info as I have it, please ask - I would dearly love to fill some 'holes'. I believe my email address is listed in Genforum, but if not & you'd like to email me directly, let me know. Tina Notify Administrator about this message?
