I am relating a few details without checking my research notes: 1) the Colony of Pennsylvania passed a law in early 1729 that required the anglicanization of surnames in order to register land claims and register to vote. This law was due, in part, to the concern over the influx of Germans into the colony and their use of the German language. 2) For those familiar with the German language, "Zimmerman" translates directly into "Carpenter". 3) The family of Heinrich Zimmerman changed its surname in response to the 1729 law. Not all sons of Heinrich adopted the change - I can't explain how they circumvented the need to process land claims using English surnames. 4) The CARPENTER genealogy published on the web by Virginia JENSEN should help you.
