Name: George Washington THOMAS
Given Name: George Washington
Surname: Thomas
Sex: M
Birth: 12 Aug 1844 in Monroe County, Tennessee 1
Death: 26 May 1930 in Austin, Travis County, Texas
Burial: 27 May 1930 Texas State Cemetery, Confederate Field, Section 1 Row V Number 7, Austin, Travis County, Texas
Event: Military Service Civil War, Confederate Soldier, Co. G. 3. Tennessee Cavalry, Army of Tennessee
Residence: 1930 Austin, Travis County, Texas
Note:
George Washington Thomas was born in Monroe County, Tennessee. He
entered Confederate service April 26, 1861, at Madisonville, Tennessee.
He was not quite 17 years old. Initially, George served in Co. B, Third
(Vaughn's) Tenn. Infantry (also called 3rd Tenn. Cavalry Regt. and 3rd
Tenn. Mtd. Inf. Regt.) until the fall of Vicksburg, Mississippi. The
Confederate Army, after months of being surrounded and under seige by
Union troops, finally had no choice but to surrender or starve to death.
After they surrendered, they were released after giving up their arms and
promising not to rejoin the Confederate Army. George W. Thomas, after
his release at Vicksburg, re-enlisted in the 2nd Tenn. Cavalry. He
served under General Joseph E. Johnson for the remainder of the war,
until Johnson's surrender at Washington, Georgia, April 5, 1865.
By 1866, George Thomas was living in Mendocino County, California, along
with his parents and brother, James J. Thomas.
On June 15, 1866, there was a land transaction made by George W. Thomas
at Mount Diablo, California.
On August 9, 1866, George married Martha S. Burns. He was a few days shy
of 22, and she was 16. They had six children over a period of time from
1867 to 1879.
George W. Thomas is listed on the 1870 Mendocino County Census as head of
household living in Little Lake Township (page 196).
G.W. Thomas is listed as a Grange Charter Member on June 1, 1874, with a
location of Cahto.
On the 1880 Great Register for Mendocino County, California, George
Washington Thomas is listed as the head of household, age 35, living in
Long Valley.
George made his final land transaction on February 10, 1881.
George Thomas and his family moved to Texas after 1881. At one time,
they lived in Thurber, Erath County, Texas. Thurber was the most
important mine site in Texas for 30 years. Coal in Thurber, probably
known to Indians, was "discovered" in 1886 by W.W. Johnson, who with his
brother, Harvey, sold out to Texas & Pacific Coal Company in 1888. (T&P
Coal Company provided fuel for the Texas and Pacific Railroad, but was
independently owned.) The town was named for H.K. Thurber, friend of T&P
Coal Company founders. The most dynamic firm member was Robert D.
Hunter, developer of 7 of 15 mines. The next president was E.L. Marston,
Hunter's son-in-law, who left mining largely to William K. Gordon, an
engineer who brought daily output to 3,000 tons. Then, in 1917, Gordon
(baked by the management of the coal company), was primarily responsible
for discovery of Ranger Oil Field, 20 miles west. Adoption of
oil-burning railway locomotives cut demand for coal. The last mine in
Thurber closed in 1921, and the 10,000 or more inhabitants of Thurber
began to move away. the coal firm changed its name to texas Pacific
Coal and Oil Company and was sold in 1963 to Joseph E. Seagram and Sons,
Inc. for $277,000,000.00. It was renamed Texas Pacific Oil Company and
is now one of the largest independent domestic energy suppliers. Much of
the coal (by estimate 127 million tons) remains underground.
Martha Thomas died in 1884 in Taylor County, Texas, at the age of 34. At
the time of her death, James was 17, John was 15, Frank was 13, William
was 12, Clara Alice was 9, and her youngest child, Logan, was only 5
years old.
George Washington Thomas was admitted to the Confederate Home in Austin,
Texas, on May 12, 1916. He died May 26, 1930.
