A mystery what is the correct name for the female Blose/Bloss who married James Scarf?
Most of this info on marriage bond and minister's report from Thom Flory
The two documents are (Thom has scanned images of both)
(1) Marriage Bond [a partially pre-printed form, filled in], and
(2) Minister's Return
The bond clearly says Mary Blose - The Minister's report says Sally Blose
Other documents in Warren County, Ohio say Sarah Blose married James Scarf.
There is no disagreement that Anna Maria (known as Mary) Blose, a sister to the woman above, married John Hess June 27, 1811 in Rockingham County VA.
The Minister's Return in this case is dated at the bottom "this 1 Day of may
1823" and is the Minister's Return for seven marriages [including James Scarf
& Sally Blows and Jacob Blose & Alizabeth Ammon] he has performed in the
preceding 15 months. [It says "turn over" - I do not have the other side nor
know what is on it].
I think that ministers were required to inform the Court in a timely manner,
but timely manner seems to have a lot of interpretations. I have a number of
direct ancestors associated with Friedens German Reformed Church, and their
pastor Johan Braun [John Brown] kept good notes in a ledger of who he married
from 1803-1826 [those dates are close, if not dead on] and turned them in
when he retired in one block - with no dates! Fortunately the German
Reformed seemed to get Marriage Bonds and so approximate dates can be gotten
from the Bond date. [My Brethren ancestors apparently used Marriage Banns,
and you are at the mercy of the Minister's Returns for marriage date info.]
Note that the Marriage Bond for James Scarf & Mary Blose is dated 11 Mar
1823, and the Minister says he married James Scarf & Sally Blows 14 Mar 1823
- this would seem right as most people perform their Courthouse duties
several days before the wedding, often a waiting period required by law, but
even if not required just for convienence - but most people know who their
bride is!!
